Hannah Lam
Cherry Hill
Hannah Lam, 12, of Cherry Hill, is a featured soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra this season. She received the honor after winning this year’s Albert M. Greenfield Student Competition, run by the orchestra’s children’s division. Lam has also been a soloist with the Ambler Symphony in Ambler, Pa., and the Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey. At age 8 she was selected to be first violinist in the Suzuki Youth Orchestra of the Americas. She studies violin at Temple University Music Preparatory Division and is a member of the Youth Chamber Orchestra at Temple’s Center for Gifted Young Musicians.

Maggie Clapp
Haddonfield
Maggie Clapp, 10, has been named a finalist in the fourth annual Sense of Wonder poetry competition sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Aging Initiative, Generations United and the Rachel Carson Council. Clapp and Connie McCaffrey, 66, created the mixed media poem “Wind,” which features art by Clapp.

Yaa Owusu-Banahene
Mount Laurel
Lenape High School senior Yaa Owusu-Banahene has been named a semifinalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Competition, which recognizes outstanding Black American high school students.

Courtney German
Medford
Shawnee High School senior Courtney German, 17, has been named by the Walnut Street Theater in Philadelphia as the winner of their essay contest. German, who is interested in majoring in both theater and journalism, will write theater reviews as part of the program.

Maryia Oreshko
Cherry Hill
This sixth grader from Rosa International Middle School has qualified to represent the United States in the Girls Under 12 section of the World Youth Chess Championships in Halkidiki, Greece, from Oct. 19 to 31.

Edward Mogck
Washington Township
This Washington Township High School senior has been named a semifinalist in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. Semifinalists are chosen based on high scores on the Preliminary SAT test and other entry requirements. Scholarship winners will be announced beginning in March

Zach Law
Voorhees
Eastern High School senior Zach Law, 17, won the Vogleson Library teen film contest for his movie Choices, an experimental genre film about the consequences of the choices we make in life. His film is available for viewing online on YouTube.

William Mercado
Mount Laurel
William Mercado, a fourth grader at Parkway Elementary School, won a national art contest sponsored by Stremicks Heritage Foods, manufacturer of the 8th Continent Soymilk brand. William’s award-winning design for the drink’s carton comes with a $1,000 gift card from Blick Art Materials for his school’s art program.

Siobhan McGirl
Cherry Hill
Gloucester Catholic High School sophomore Siobhan McGirl reigned as Colleen Queen of the Great Irish Fair on Sept. 18 and 19 in New York City. Parade officials said Siobhan was chosen because of her high academic achievements and strong commitment to service. The event promotes Irish culture and the advancement of Catholic education.

Andrew Gaus
Moorestown
Camden Catholic High School senior Andrew Gaus of Moorestown was selected by the CCHS Hall of Fame Committee to receive a $1,000 scholarship for exemplifying leadership, determination and school spirit.

Shannon Cahill
Mount Laurel
Cahill, 17, Mount Laurel, attended this summer’s New Jersey Girls State program held at Georgian Court University in Lakewood. The highly selective program teaches young women about leadership and government. Cahill is a senior at Camden Catholic High School.

Matthew Bisk
Mount Laurel
Lenape High School Student Matthew Bisk earned a perfect score on the ACT test, a college-placement series of multiple-choice tests covering four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science. The Writing Test, which is optional, measures skill in planning and writing a short essay.
