by Editorial Staff--Suburban Family Magazine

Emily Lubin, Moorestown
Lubin (pictured), 15, a Moorestown High School junior, has spent the last eight years assisting the Moorestown Wigs for Kids, which uses donated ponytails to make hairpieces for children suffering from cancer or other diseases that cause hair loss. She recently donated her third 12-inch ponytail to the nonprofit, which has collected more than 300 ponytails since Lubin joined up in second grade.

Lisa Segrest, Gregory Slaton, Adam Cohler & Garrett Clayman, Cherry Hill
Working together, the four lifeguards saved a woman’s life at Woodcrest Swim Club in Cherry Hill, during a summer heat wave. Pictured from left, Segrest, Slaton, Cohler and Clayman worked together to assist a swimmer who was in distress and experiencing difficultly during a 98-degree day at the pool. Cohler and Clayman are both juniors at Cherry Hill High School East.

Nikos Pappas, Voorhees
Pappas was recognized by the New Jersey Association of Community Providers at its 12th Annual Community Stars Awards Dinner, for his advocacy work on behalf of New Jersey residents living with disabilities. Pappas advocated for a new state law eliminating offensive and outdated language toward those with disabilities from New Jersey regulations and statutes. He also testified this year before a New Jersey Senate budget committee state budget against cuts to community programs for people with disabilities.

Ryan Ruggiero, Washington Township
Ruggiero, a 24-year-old Peace Corps volunteer from Washington Township, was selected as one of 15 finalists (out of thousands of applicants) chosen to represent the United States in October at the annual United Nations Youth Forum in Paris. Ruggiero, (pictured at right), is a 2005 graduate of Bishop Eustace Preparatory School and has been a member of the Peace Corps since 2009.

Gerry Griesser, Larry Flick & Jim Waters, Haddonfield
Prudential Fox and Roach Realtors is collecting backpacks filled with school supplies and back-to-school items for underprivileged kids, for the sixth year in a row. Pictured from left, Griesser, Flick and Waters kicked off the annual program, hoping to beat last year’s record of more than 900 donated backpacks.

Kylie Ennis, Woolwich Township
Ennis wanted to combine her love of animals (and adopting homeless dogs in need) with her passion for giving back to the community. So the 7-year-old decided to host a puppy-themed birthday party, asking her guests to bring donations and supplies for her local animal shelter in lieu of gifts.

Carla T. Riley, Mount Laurel
After her husband was killed in an accident, Riley needed to channel her grief into something positive. She founded An Array of Hope, an inspirational radio show on 1460-AM, and a corresponding charity. She plans to use the funds to provide financial support to the needy and performance art scholarships to high school students.

Jaysel Shah, Marlton
Shah, of Lenape High School, refurbished a courtyard at the Animal Welfare Association of Voorhees, painting and refurbishing picnic tables, planting trees and building a new stone walkway with a river stone border. Because of his many hours of volunteerism and efforts, he received his Eagle Scout award.

Alyssa Marie Suliguin Gonzales, Burlington Township
Gonzales was honored with the 2011 Billie Jean King Character Award and a $1,000 scholarship. Gonzales, a junior tennis member at the Cherry Hill Health & Racquet Club, was chosen for the award based on her outstanding application, references, essay and a personal meeting with Billie Jean King and the Hamlin Family. As part of the scholarship, she will complete a character-building program via an online interactive character curriculum and character workshops designed for youth in academic and athletic settings.

Charlie Kojeski, Medford
Charlie Kojeski was named Citizen of the Year by the Medford-Vincentown Rotary Club. The owner and president of Kojeski Construction in Voorhees, Kojeski was honored for his work helping to repair and renovate homes for people in need, volunteering his personal time and money to get the projects done. Among his charitable projects are wheelchair ramps for children with physical disabilities and a home for an injured veteran and his family.

Kati Angelini, Moorestown
This local baker hosts an “Iron Cupcake Challenge” in which professional and amateur bakers compete and raise money for pediatric cancer research. She has raised thousands for groups like Alex’s Lemonade Stand with these themed cupcake bake-offs. The next one is planned for October, she says.

Kyle Frame, Marlton
Kyle S. Frame of Venture Crew 49 received his Eagle Scout award after completing an extensive service project and fulfilling the requirements over several years, including earning at least 21 merit badges. The honor was presented to him by Deputy Mayor Joe Howarth, a former Marlton troop leader.
