Marlton Penguin B Street Hockey Tournament Team (pictured)

This youth team took home the title of National Street Hockey Association Champions by defeating Monroe Township by a score of 5-1 on May 6 in Egg Harbor Township. The team went 26-3-4 during the season and tallied four tournament championships.

Elizabeth Haddon Elementary School Olympiad Team

Sixteen fourth- and fifth-graders from Elizabeth Haddon Elementary School won the N.J. Olympiad Elementary Tournament hosted at Moorestown Friends School. The students competed against 10 elementary schools throughout New Jersey in several events, including Straw Egg Drop, Water Rockets, Tennis Ball Catapult, Can Race and Calculator Contest. The team was coached by fourth-grade teacher Deborah Landry and fifth-grade teacher Vince DelDuca.

Mount Laurel Storm 12U Team

The girls of Storm 12U claimed the title of champions of the Delran Spring Fling Tournament. They played six games and a grand total of 36 innings against the Waterford Warriors, Medford Black Diamonds, Marlton Thunder Black and the Moorestown Flames. The Storm faced Medford in the championship game and came out on top by a score of 12-5.

Moorestown 9U Baseball Team

After a dominant weekend at the GVAA Memorial Day Tournament, Moorestown’s 9U District baseball team swept the tournament as defending State Champions with a 9-3 victory over Marlton in Voorhees Township. Team manager Adam Gerber and coaches Dan Gannon, Fran Lee and Glenn Jones used six different pitchers during the three-day, four-game tournament. Vital in each game was the moundwork of Danny Gerber, Eric Schmoll, Nick Yedman, Evan Buckley, Jack Jones and Wyatt Atkinson.

14U Marlton Thunder Red Softball Team

The girls’ softball team has qualified for three national World Series tournaments this year—USSSA (Orlando), WFC (Myrtle Beach) and NSA/PONY (Greensboro, S.C.). The team is comprised of mostly eighth-graders from Marlton.

Larry Floyd, Tyler Stumm, Jordan Ashley, A.J. Ashton
Washington Township
Members of the Washington Township Board of Education saluted the achievements of the boys’ shuttle hurdle relay team, who earned 2011-12 New Jersey Group IV State Championship status last month. The relay group of Larry Floyd, Tyler Stumm, Jordan Ashley and A.J. Ashton won the title with a time of 30.52 seconds at a competition in Toms River this January.

Shawnee Girls’ Lacrosse Team

Shawnee girls’ lacrosse raised money for multiple sclerosis this season, dedicating their game against Winslow to fight MS. The team acquired approximately $1,500 to donate to MS by selling T-shirts, and many of the girls planned to participate in the recent MS Walk in Medford Lakes as well to support the cause.

Haddonfield High School Crew
Haddonfield
The crew team performed admirably at the recent City Championships in Philadelphia against teams from across New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The Women’s JV 4 boat of Samantha Verzella, Anna Sparrow, Meghan Knecht, Kaitlyn McConville and coxswain Julia Gallwitz sprinted into the final and finished third out of a total field of 18, winning the bronze medal.

Marlton Thunder 12U Red Fastpitch Softball Team

This fastpitch softball team came in first place in the USSSA May Mayhem World Series Qualifier earlier this season. During the 20-team tournament, which featured some of the best teams in the tri-state area, the girls of the Thunder went 7-0 and outscored their opponents with a final record of 57-7 overall. Their next step is to the World Series in Orlando, Fla., this summer.

Eastern High School The King and I Cast
Voorhees
For the second year in a row, Eastern Regional High School’s musical production, The King and I, was nominated for “Outstanding Overall Production” by Paper Mill Playhouse, the state theater of New Jersey. The musical was nominated for five other awards and two honorable mentions. More than 100 musicals from across the state were evaluated by the Rising Star Award Corps of Evaluators, honoring exceptional performances and productions in high school musical theater.
