Reconstructive Orthopedics

by Rob Scott

Bringing it all Together: Reconstructive Orthopedics provides South Jersey with a variety of world-class experts under one roof.

When you’re not feeling well, it’s comforting to hear a doctor say, “Yeah, I know what this is. I can take care of this.”

With South Jersey’s Reconstructive Orthopedics and its team of world-class physicians, that’s exactly what you’re going to get—every time. Reconstructive Orthopedics has six (soon to be eight) locations serving Burlington, Camden and Gloucester (and soon to be Cumberland) counties, with a team of physicians boasting more than 300 years combined experience and more than 100,000 surgeries performed.

“There’s nothing from an orthopedic standpoint we can’t handle and don’t see on a daily basis,” says Dr. Robert Greenleaf, a fellowship-trained surgeon with a subspecialty in spinal surgery. “We’re absolutely unparalleled in the care we offer.”

Reconstructive Orthopedics is the only full-service orthopedic practice in South Jersey and the largest orthopedic practice in the entire state, offering all major orthopedic surgery subspecialties and interventional pain management, while also owning and providing office services in physical therapy, x-ray and durable medical equipment. (Translation: Basically, they can treat roughly 99 percent of all orthopedic injuries.)

Greenleaf, just one of the practice’s 18 (soon to be 25) world-class-trained physicians, says the only other place patients can get the kind of care Reconstructive Orthopedics offers is a major university hospital in a city.

“To be a private practice within a community like this is a rarity,” says Greenleaf, who noted that many of the physicians at Reconstructive Orthopedics cut their teeth at some of those major university hospitals.

With a team of physicians trained at world-renowned institutions like the Mayo Clinic, Harvard, John Hopkins and Columbia, it’s no wonder the practice has earned numerous “Top Doctors” awards from publications in Philadelphia and South Jersey. Their combined experience covers a broad range of subspecialties, including spine, sports medicine, foot and ankle and hand and wrist.

Dr. John Mariani, a member of the practice’s Total Joint Team, referenced a recent report from the Institute of Medicine that ticked off the challenges facing health care professionals today, one of them simply being the amount of information a physician needs to possess to provide the highest level of care to their patients.

“There’s just a lot to know. A surgeon can’t know everything,” Mariani says. “One of the ways to combat those difficulties is to have groups of surgeons (working together) who know everything.”

In essence, that’s Reconstructive Orthopedics’ business model. And with so many experts under one roof, “it’s pretty unusual that somebody would have a problem that we wouldn’t have someone who could help them,” says Mariani. “I tell patients right out, if I can’t figure out your problem, I’ve got someone who can.”

Greenleaf praises the practice’s “team approach.”

“The chemistry among the physicians is just fantastic. We can provide such a comprehensive orthopedic service. We have help everywhere,” he says. “Behind the scenes, it’s very convenient … and that translates to much less headaches for the patient.”

But the level of academic excellence and clinical quality on display at the nearly 80-year-old practice is sort of “a given,” according to Mariani.

What truly sets Reconstructive Orthopedics apart is the level of personal attention its patients receive. When you walk through the practice’s doors, you’re connected with an experienced physician who’s with you every step of the way—as opposed to large training centers where patients are often bounced around and treated or evaluated by physicians-in-training or non-surgeon physicians.

“The idea of access is important to patients,” says Mariani. “There’s a level of comfort patients have in talking to the doctor who performed their surgery, or who will perform their surgery.”

Because the practice is embedded in South Jersey, and has been for decades, it has strong ties with many other health care institutions in the area, including Virtua Health and Kennedy Health System, as well as affiliations with surgery centers and athletic teams across the region. The doctors at Reconstructive Orthopedics have close professional bonds with other medical experts in the region; chances are, they know your primary care physician, which creates a “continuity of care” that is unmatched, according to Greenleaf. Built on a foundation of elite-level care with a personal, homegrown touch, Reconstructive Orthopedics is the premier orthopedic practice in the state. And according to Mariani, they’re well-positioned to remain so for a long time.

“We’re here in New Jersey,” he says. “We are focused on delivering caring and compassionate health care, while also delivering the expertise that should be a given anywhere in this country.”
