The Center for Neurological and Neurodevelopmental Health

by Editorial Staff--Suburban Family Magazine

T he Center for Neurological and Neurodevelopmental Health (CNNH) in Gibbsboro is a patient- and family-centered “Specialty Care Medical HomeSM” dedicated to optimizing brain health for children and adults since 2005.The team at CNNH consider themselves more than just a center for neurological care, according to Mark Mintz, MD, founder, president and CEO. So CNNH developed a new approach to delivering comprehensive health care. Through their Specialty Care Medical HomeSM model, CNNH looks at all aspects of brain health and functioning. By bringing together a multidisciplinary team of expert specialists, CNNH can offer patients and their families comprehensive assessments, accurate diagnoses, effective therapies and personalized care.

A UNIQUE MODEL OF CARE CNNH created this innovative patient- and family-centered model—the first of its kind in the region—providing a comprehensive array of assessment, treatment and support services in office, school, home and community environments: all “under one roof.”

Their philosophy is to understand the biological mechanisms underlying the symptoms and manifestations of neurological, neuropsychiatric, developmental, behavioral, cognitive and other related disorders with the understanding that each person is unique.

Such “disease management” and “personalized medical care” methodologies allow for targeted medical, cognitive and behavioral therapeutic strategies, resulting in improved clinical outcomes and higher quality of life for individuals and their families.

At CNNH, they begin their patient relationship by taking the time necessary to understand all of a patient’s concerns, symptoms and personal needs in order to make an accurate assessment and treatment plan.

Although several specialists may be involved with a patient’s evaluation and care, team members consult and interact with each other, as well as communicate with families and other providers. After the initial appointment, which can take 90 minutes or more, the CNNH team provides ongoing continuity of care and management. Follow up visits are tailored to the needs of the patient, and may include further neurological or laboratory testing, neuropsychological evaluation, behavioral assessments, advanced neurophysiological testing (measuring “brain waves” and “brain processing”) and computerized screenings. The CNNH clinical team is equipped to offer an array of evidence-based therapeutic interventions, including cognitive behavioral and rehabilitation therapies, creative arts therapies (music, art and dance/movement), social development therapies and medical treatments. CNNH’s professional team—neurologists, neuropsychologists, advanced practice nurses, behavioral specialists, specialized teachers, social workers—look not only at symptoms, but below the surface for underlying biological causes of behavioral, learning, and neurological concerns and disorders. This gives the persons served by CNNH a fresh and unique approach to distressing problems, allowing individuals to achieve optimal outcomes and results. CNNH’s new model for the delivery of health care eliminates the need to travel to many different providers for multiple evaluations, and offers rare accessibility to a multitude of expert professionals.

CHANGING THE INDUSTRY
No matter the type of problem or condition, fragmented medical care can be one of the most detrimental hurdles to proper treatment, especially in regard to brain injuries, concussions, neurological disorders, learning differences, attentional problems, developmental disabilities and behavioral difficulties, according to Mintz. “We have brought together a compassionate, multidisciplinary team of experts in neurological, neuropsychological and neurobehavioral care all under one roof, sharing a constant dedication to the highest standards of care,” he says. The most successful CNNH outcomes are those that engage the patient’s support team. Mintz and the CNNH team reach into homes, schools and communities to improve awareness of and education about neurological and developmental conditions affecting children and adults. Through ongoing workshops and training sessions, parents, siblings and caregivers are able to gain a greater understanding of the medical and neuropsychiatric conditions affecting their loved ones, and therefore improve the lives of everyone around them. At CNNH, the professional staff is compassionate in addressing the fears of all those affected when an individual is diagnosed with a neurological condition. “We provide understanding and help focus on the individual’s abilities—not disabilities,” says Dr. Mintz. “We applaud all of those who overcome such daily adversities.”
