Q&A

When homeowners are considering woodwork to enhance their fireplace systems, are there any important factors they should take into account?
This type of work is not one size fits all, and we are able to tailor it to whatever the customer needs. A very popular concept is having built-ins around the fireplace and the TV hung above the fireplace. It's a known fact that the new TVs don't love all the heat some fireplaces can put out, but we pay very close attention to all clearances and codes for the fireplace, both to the combustible materials and the TVs alike, and are generally able to achieve the customers’ desires. We don’t use subcontractors, so all the work done in a customer’s home is performed by one of our NFI certified installers.

Any advice for projects homeowners might be taking on this time of year?
With any project you’re doing, especially if you’re considering putting in an insert or a new gas log into an existing fireplace, we require that your chimney is cleaned and inspected with Level II inspection prior to that. Our clients’ safety is our first priority.

Are there any steps people should take mid-season in terms of maintenance?
If they’re burning wood, their chimney should be swept after every chord of wood. That’s a strong recommendation because it will help the stove burn efficiently and effectively. With a vent-free product, you want to make sure that the area around the product is clean and that there’s no dust on the logs. With a direct-vent product, a cleaning at the beginning of the season is enough for the burn season.
